Vigorous & Easy to Grow: Unlike many variegated plants which can be delicate, 'Durban' is a fast-growing, robust variety that establishes quickly.
Weather Adaptable: Once established, it is remarkably resilient, thriving in both dry and humid conditions, provided it receives supplemental water during heatwaves.
Season-Long Interest: While other plants stop looking good after they bloom, the foliage of 'Durban' remains a stunning focal point from the moment it sprouts in spring until the frost hits in autumn.
Sunlight: For the brightest foliage colors, plant in full sun. It can tolerate partial shade, but the colors may be slightly less intense.
Soil Media: Use ordinary garden soil enriched with well-decayed cow manure and sand. Excellent drainage is key to preventing rhizome rot.
Watering: Canna 'Durban' is a thirsty plant during its growth spurt. Water regularly when the top 3 inches of soil feel dry. Avoid water-logged soil; it likes to be moist, not "swimming."

Avoid "wet feet" at all costs! To prevent your bulbs or rhizomes from rotting before they wake up, mix a handful of coarse sand or perlite into the bottom of your planting hole. This creates a "drainage pillow" that keeps water from pooling around the base during heavy rains.
